Dig Dug Island: Minami no Jima no Pukapukapon (ディグダグアイランド-南の島のプクプクポン) was a massively-multiplayer online (MMO) video game developed by VerX Corporation and published by Namco Bandai Games for PC exclusively in Japan. Beta testing began completed in December 2007, officially launching on May 8, 2008. Servers for the game only lasted a year before shuttering on April 21, 2009. The game was based on Dig Dug II and had players creating their own personalized islands, whilst protecting them from enemies.

GameplayEdit

The main game was based on the direct sequel to the original, Dig Dug II. The player controlled a character, including ones from Namco's Valkyrie and Babylonian Castle Saga series, and must defeat all the enemies in each of the game's islands. This can be done by either inflating them with the pump until they pop, or by drilling along fault lines, causing chunks of the island to sink into the ocean.

Players could also create their own personalized islands, with buildings, statues and other decorations, which must be protected by enemies. Players could also directly chat with other players and invite them to their islands.

DevelopmentEdit

Dig Dug Island was developed by VerX Corporation, a Japanese game developer that specialized in online games.[1] It was one of two games they produced for Namco Bandai Games, the other being Tancle, an online 3D tank game based on the Tank Battalion series. Beta testing officially concluded in December 2007. Launching on May 8, 2008, the game only lasted for less than a year, closing down on April 21, 2009, which was also the closing date for Tancle.[2]
